What is TMJ?
TMJ, properly referred to as TMJ disorder, affects the jaw joint, or the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joints connect the jaw to the scull, and are located at the side of the head near the ears. The temporomandibular joints are essential to functional eating, speaking, and facial expressions. It is a little-known fact that the temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex and most frequently used joints in the body.
Causes and Symptoms of TMJ
TMJ can have a number of causes, such as:
Bruxism: habitual grinding and clenching of the teeth. This is one of the most common causes of TMJ disorders.
Cartilage wear and tear: the cartilage discs that pad the TMJ can become worn or displaced, which causes painful friction and grinding of the jaw bone.
Arthritis: this can cause painful inflammation of the TMJ and may also cause adjoining tissues, ligaments and muscles to swell.
Misaligned Bite: if a person's bite is not properly aligned, undue stress can be put on the TMJ through everyday movement like chewing and even speaking.
Dislocated TMJ: when a person's jaw bone pops and cracks, it may be dislocated. This can negatively affect jaw movement and strain the muscles of the jaw, neck and face.
Just as there are a number of possible causes of TMJ, there are a number of symptoms associated with the disorder. TMJ patients often experience jaw joint pain, ear pain, headaches, tooth pain, and neck and shoulder pain.
TMJ Treatment
There are a number of TMJ treatment options, also referred to as TMJ therapy. The very first step in TMJ treatment is to relieve the pain. This is often done by fitting the patient with a TMJ mouth guard. Next, Dr. Pohl will use modern bite technology to find the cause of misalignment or stress that is the root of the problem. In some cases, the patient can do a routine of jaw exercises to ease the clenching or grinding that is behind his or her TMJ.
