Root Canal in Boca Raton with Dr. Mitchell Pohl
A root canal, technically known as root canal therapy, is the most common procedure performed in endodontics, the field of dentistry that deals with the internal tissues of the teeth (known as the pulp). Root canal therapy is performed to save a tooth whose pulp has become infected: root canals save an average of 17 million teeth each year. If you have a tooth that is damage or infected, a root canal at the Boca Raton practice of Dr. Mitchell Pohl may be the solution that allows you to keep your tooth.
What is a Root Canal?
The pulp of a tooth carries the tooth’s nerves, veins, arteries and lymph vessels, and is considered to be the vital part of a tooth. The root canals of a tooth are small, thin divisions that extend from the top of the pulp to the tip of the root. If the pulp of a tooth is traumatized – by deep cavities, a tooth fracture or infection – the tooth can begin to die. During root canal therapy, Dr. Pohl cleans infection and debris from the entire pulp chamber, including the root canals of the tooth, then fills the tooth to prevent further damage.
The Root Canal Procedure
The first step in the root canal process is for Dr. Pohl to numb the area surrounding the tooth to be treated with a local anesthetic. He will then clean out the damaged areas of the tooth, removing all debris from the pulp chamber and the root canals attached to it. Once the tooth is prepared, Dr. Pohl will slightly widen the root canal to prepare it to be filled with a rubber-like material and sealed with a temporary filling. The patient returns to Dr. Pohl’s office for another visit to have a permanent porcelain crown fitted over the top of the tooth.
