What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are actually replacement tooth roots to which natural-looking replacement teeth are permanently attached. As opposed to dentures, which are removable, implants are a permanent fixture in the patient's mouth and allow for not only a natural appearance, but natural speaking and chewing, as well.

The Dental Implants Process
When a patient opts for dental implants from Boca Raton dentist Dr. Mitchell Pohl, he often suggests immediate or same-day implants as the most convenient option. With one-day, patented Immediate Function Nobel implants, the patient is fitted with a provisional crown on the same day as a tooth is lost or extracted. One-day implants are a great option for patients who wish to use normal dental implants but who want to have a complete smile throughout the treatment process.
For traditional dental implants, the process takes a bit longer. The first step in the dental implants process is oral surgery to prepare the jawbone for the implant. During this procedure, the patient is comfortably sedated while Dr. Pohl inserts the titanium bars to which the implants will be attached into the jawbone. After this, the healing process, known as osseointegration, must take place.
Osseointegration is the process by which the titanium tooth roots are naturally fused to the patient's jawbone.
Once osseointegration is complete, the patient returns to Dr. Pohl's office for the addition of the artificial tooth to the implanted post, or "root". First, the patient will be sedated to remain comfortable. Then, Dr. Pohl will expose the formerly-implanted titanium posts and twist the patient's replacement tooth into place. At the conclusion of this visit, the patient has a beautiful, natural-looking smile with no gaps or missing teeth, allowing for normal function, chewing, and speaking.
NobelActive™
The key to successful implant surgery is the osseointegration process, during which the artificial tooth root is fused with the patient's jaw bone. Recently, Nobel Biocare pioneered another hybrid implant device that has design characteristics that modify the jawbone structure as the implant is being placed, optimizing the osseointegration process and often eliminating the need for grafting products to accelerate healing.
