What is a Dental Crown?

When teeth are cracked, severely decayed, worn down or have been treated with a root canal, Dr. Pohl may suggest a dental crown.  A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a thin shell of tooth-colored material that is fitted entirely over the surface of a tooth.  Crowns prevent further damage to the treated tooth, restore functionality, and strengthen and seal damaged teeth.

The Dental Crowns Process

Dental crowns are designed to fit over a patient's teeth to provide strength and support.  Dental crowns at the Boca Raton office of Dr. Mitchell Pohl are often applied in two stages.

During the patient's first dental crown appointment, Dr. Pohl will clean out any decay that affects the tooth and remove portions of the outer structure of the tooth to make room for the crown.  He will then take an impression of the tooth to be capped, and this impression is sent to a dental laboratory to be used in the construction of the crown.  Before leaving the office, the patient will be fitted with a temporary crown.

Once the dental crown is ready, the patient returns to the office for a final dental crowns visit.  Dr. Pohl will fit the custom-made crown over the top of the tooth to be treated.  Once he is satisfied with the fit and appearance of the crown, Dr. Pohl will permanently cement the crown into place.  To complete the process, Dr. Pohl will buff and polish the crown for the most natural appearance.
